Say 'Yes' to normal, not special episodes

Okay. We all know about how our media shows super thin women on tv and not what real women look like.

TLC has a show called 'Say Yes to the Dress', it's about really rich people looking for their perfect wedding dress. I'm not kidding. I've seen a few episodes just because the dresses are absolutely gorgeous. (I hate the ideas of wedding though, remember? Here.)

But a few days ago I was flipping channels and I stopped on TLC. One of the commercials was showing that there was a new program to 'Say Yes to the Dress' called 'Big Bliss.' It featured plus size women finding their wedding dress!

At first, I thought it was really cool. But I couldn't grip why I did not like the idea entirely.

But here's why:

Being full-size isn't a special. Why should they have their own episode? Being small certainly isn't special either. It's just a body type. Why do they need their own episode, why is it a big deal that they are BIG? Why can't they just be on the 'regular' show with the other regular people? Please. I just don't understand why we need to market 'full-sized' shows. Weight loss reality shows are a little different, but that's another issue I'm sure I will post on later.

Equality of representation does not mean different representation. We are all different sized people, but to emphasize that to 'prove' that your are 'not' fitting in with the media representation of super thin ladies by making a BIG deal about one episode about BIG WOMEN. really? That just shows that you do show super thing ladies on your regular episodes.

Let's just include different sized women on DIFFERENT EPISODES together. Treat size like a physical trait, like eye color or hair color. I don't see Blonde Bliss episodes or brown eyed beauties bliss episodes.

If someone told me I was chosen to be on a show because of my shoe size or my hair color or my eye color or my big boobs for a special episode on that trait...I would be like....offended, not complimented.

Making it a special episode makes it seem like it's not good enough to be on the regular episode. Like the 'thin women' are better and deserve more time and episodes.

Ashamed of Living in this State

I grew up in the greatest state in the United States.

The greatest state until last night, of course.

We think everything is so black and white, democrat and republican, we ignore that their is a lot of grey areas in every issue.

What am I talking about? If you must ask, you should be reading the newspaper.

I'll tell you anyway. Minnesota (my beloved home state) passed an amendment to make marriage between a man and a woman. I can no longer call this my beloved state because I am ashamed of living here. Of being in a state that encourages such definition.

I'm not gonna pretend to know about what is gonna happen. My friends say I can vote no on it in the elections. I will vote no. I will. I will. I will. I don't know much about politics and I vote independent because I see the grey areas in all issues, not the black and white politics. Some say this is a waste of a vote. But I sleep better at not knowing that I didn't vote for the people who make the hateful laws.

I like all people I meet. Yes, I do. In some ways even the most negative encounter I have experienced has made me a better person and I am grateful for that person for helping me become the best person I can be.

And I love my gays. I love my straights. I love my closeted and uncloseted friends.

Here is my video reaction to the amendment. I thought it was suiting that I would have it on my first youtube video. =]

Even after this horrible amendment was passed to the next stage, I still believe that all people are good. Don't get me wrong.

A feminist marriage?

My friend and coworker is a videographer and has his own business, Memories in Motion. So pretty much he makes a "music video" of couple's weddings. He is amazingly good and you can't believe he hasn't gotten some sort of professional training.

But this is not about a promotion of his business(check it out if you wish). His new wedding video got me thinking about my dream wedding. And ugh, I am so indecisive about it all.

When I was 14, I decided that I was 'never' going to get married. Yep, never. I didn't see the point, I could still have kids and not be married, I could still have a job and not be married, I could still live with a male and not be married.
